The geriatric residency program seeks to train family medicine and /or internal medicine physicians in all facets of clinical geriatrics over a period of twelve months. Both medical and non-medical aspects of elder care will be emphasized, including institutional, non-institutional, regulatory, economic, psycho-social, pharmacologic, rehabilitation, palliative, and other associated areas. Learning will be patient- based in a variety of settings, stressing the multi-disciplinary team approach to the comprehensive care of the frail, elderly population, as well as didactic , scholarly , and instructional activities. The goal of this program is to prepare graduates to be able to obtain certification of added qualifications in geriatric medicine, and to be capable of excellent performance in geriatric care as practitioners, educators,, administrators, or directors of elder care facilities. The overall experience includes in-patient, out-patient, skilled nursing facilities over two nursing homes, transitional care facility, assisted living, independent retirement complex, geriatric psychiatry, hospice care, home health agencies, rehabilitation, social services, community outreach, geriatric pharmacy, and more. The fellow is under the supervision of three faculty members who hold the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics. Where appropriate, the fellow will interact with other attendings and be involved with the teaching of the house staff. Program Duration The program duration is 12 months beginning July 1 through June 30.
