1991 our obstetrics fellowship has provided family physicians the opportunity
to further develop skills in obstetrics and in the stabilization of
the newborn patient. Our program emphasizes management of all forms
of abnormal labor, operative obstetrics and neonatal stabilization.
Completed

Possess
DEA registration and Florida medical licensure. These licenses
are required before the anticipated date
of matriculation. (Anticipate at least 6 months processing
to obtain licensure from the Florida Board of Medicine.)
Obtain
Florida Hospital Medical Staff Privileges. Medical staff privileges
are required prior to beginning fellowship.
Be able to abide by the rules of the Florida Hospital Family Medicine
Residency and function in accordance with Florida Hospital’s
mission.
Demonstrable
aptitude and interest in obstetrics during residency training
and/or practice and definitive plans to include obstetrics in
the practice of family medicine upon completion of the fellowship
program.
Good
academic performance in residency defined on the basis of standardized
examination scores and clinical performance.
Excellent
leadership skills demonstrated in residency training or practice.
The
program is supported by a level III neonatal intensive care unit, staff
perinatologists, and neonatologists and is supervised by 6 enthusiastic
full-time faculty obstetricians. The program is centered on the interdisciplinary
management of the pregnant patient including high-risk obstetrics.
The residency is responsible for approximately 100 deliveries per month.
It is anticipated that the fellow would be primarily involved in at
least 100 cesarean sections and 50-75 post-partum tubal ligations during
their training.
Program
Duration
The program duration is 12 months beginning August 1 through July 31.
Curriculum
Supervising
and teaching residents and students, managing all forms of labor,
antepartum and postpartum care.
Performing
obstetric procedures including, but not limited to, primary and repeat
cesarean sections, post-partum tubal ligations, and vacuum assisted
vaginal deliveries.
Neonatal
intensive care unit rotation (4 weeks).
Attendance
and participation in medical education conferences.
In
house labor and delivery room call an average of 2 times a week.
Participation
in research and preparation of an article suitable for publication.
Assisting
in gynecologic surgeries.
Maintain
a family medicine continuity clinic.

Diagnosis
and management of the abnormal cervix, postmenopausal bleeding
Objectives
Provide
further training in high-risk obstetrics to include, but not limited
to, competency in cesarean section, post-partum tubal ligations and
vacuum assisted vaginal deliveries.
Develop
a working knowledge of obstetrical ultrasound.
Manage
all forms of abnormal labor.
Assess
the risks of the prenatal patient.
To
have a good understanding of medical diseases that effect the outcome
of pregnancy and to know when to obtain appropriate consultation.
Manage
first trimester bleeding and miscarriage.
Develop
competency in evaluating incomplete abortions and retained placenta
at term and performing suction curettage and sharp curettage.
Develop
competency in managing missed abortion and stillbirth.
Develop
a working knowledge of neonatal emergencies and the stabilization
of the newborn including neonatal resuscitation.
Provide
an avenue for faculty development.
Promote
obstetrics in family medicine while maintaining family medicine skills.
Develop
experience in medical research.

annual stipend $48,000.

Medical
expenses as per resident contract.
Basic
Group Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance
in the amount of the fellow’s annual salary. Additional Life
and AD&D insurance may be purchased in an amount equal to one,
two or three times the amount of the fellow’s annual salary.
Dependent Life Insurance may also be purchased.
Holidays:
Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s
Day and Memorial Day.
Two
(2) white lab coats will be furnished by the hospital.

Vacation/Personal
Time: Residents
receive 4 weeks vacation/personal time each year. Major holidays are also
off except when scheduled for holiday call. Compensation days off are
offered for holidays worked.

Deadline for receiving applications is November 1. Final decisions are
made on or about December 1. After receipt of a complete application,
applicants will be notified if a personal interview is required.
